The court in Pakistan sentenced in absentia the 68-year-old former prime minister of the country Nawaz Sharif. He, as well as his relatives, was convicted of buying expensive apartments in London with funds of dubious origin.
The court appointed Sharif a 10-year prison sentence, Reuters reports. In addition, the former official must pay $ 10.6 million as a fine.
The daughter of ex-premier Maryam Nawaz was sentenced to seven years in prison and 2.6 million pounds sterling fine. And his son-in-law Safdar Avan received 1 year of imprisonment.
The court of the National Control Bureau of Pakistan (NAB) announced the verdict after a series of delays. Sharif had earlier asked to postpone the sentencing while he was in London with his wife, where she was being treated for cancer. During the sentencing, the accused together with his children did not leave the capital of Great Britain.
Fearing the turmoil, the Pakistani authorities blocked roads around a complex of government buildings, one of which is the Supreme Court. They also banned the holding of rallies and marches in the area, according to the Russian service of the BBC.
Nawaz Sharif took office as Prime Minister of Pakistan in June 2013. Previously, he held this position in 1990-1993 and in 1997-1999. He is one of the most popular politicians in the country.
The investigation into Sharif began after the scandalous publication in the spring of 2016 of the "Panama archive." It includes confidential documents of the Panamanian firm Mossack Fonseca, which specializes in the creation of offshore companies. From these papers it follows that Mossack Fonseca helped clients, including large politicians from different countries, launder money, avoid sanctions and evade taxes.
Mossack Fonseca's clients were FIFA officials, actress Emma Watson, prime ministers of Iceland and the UK. It also mentioned the name of the long-time friend of the Russian president - cellist Sergei Roldugin, who was called Vladimir Putin's "purse".
The first victim of the Panamanian scandal was the Prime Minister of Iceland, Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson, who resigned a few days after the publication of the Panamanian documents. From them it became known that he and his wife owned an offshore company, which he did not declare after he was elected to the Icelandic parliament.
The Panamanian documents also said that Sharif's relatives were associated with offshore companies that were allegedly used to divert funds and buy foreign assets, in particular expensive apartments on the fashionable London Park Lane Street (bought in 1993, 1995 and 1996). Under suspicion were himself a high-ranking official Nawaz Sharif, his sons Hussein and Hasan, daughter Mariam and son-in-law Safdar.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan in July 2017 dismissed Sharif from the post of Prime Minister of the country in connection with the investigation of the involvement of his children in the "Panamanian documents".
Currently, Sharif is a figurant of several cases related to financial crimes. He and his family members consider the cases politically motivated and add that the property in London is legally acquired.
According to Sharif, for his persecution there is a grouping of military men who have great influence in politics, but do not advertise it. Sharif crossed the road to the military after he returned to the prime minister's seat again in 2013 and actively engaged in foreign policy, which the generals are accustomed to consider their zone of responsibility.
